The Burnout Cycle
I recently spoke with a patient who was simply tired.
The past few weeks had been filled with nonstop stress at work, concerned with looming layoffs, and therefore mentally spiraling with distress. On top of that, she was navigating lifelong hormonal fluctuations, feeling unsupported by family, and fighting a losing battle with the scale despite "moving mountains" to see a change.
She was completely burnt out, caught in a seemingly never-ending cycle. Unfortunately, this is a story I hear all too often.
Shifting from Friction to Grace
After a tearful, heavy moment of realization, it became clear that she needed support and grace. She had to acknowledge that her current coping mechanisms weren't serving her anymore. Together, we mapped out a few actionable shifts to lighten her mental load:
Integrating Mental Health Support: Bringing in a therapist to navigate the emotional weight, alongside daily self-care comforts.
Ditching the Scale: The daily weigh-in had become a source of mental harm. We shifted the focus from an arbitrary number to managing overall expectations.
Radical Self-Responsibility: Recognizing that while community is wonderful, true long-term health is a personal commitment to oneself.
The Big Picture for the Long Haul
As we broke down the "why" behind these steps, her energy shifted. She realized this wasn't just a quick fix for tomorrow, but a blueprint for life. We focused on three core pillars:
Stress Management is Medicine: Chronic stress doesn't just alter our food behaviors; it drives adverse physiological conditions. Managing it is non-negotiable.
Health is a Process, Not a Number: When I ask struggling patients how closely they’re following their customized meal plans, the answer is usually a 3 to 5 out of 10. The issue is rarely a bad plan, it’s life’s curveballs and distractions getting in the way. When we rely solely on the scale for validation, a slow week leads to disappointment, which triggers a return to old habits. By removing the scale, we remove the judgment and open up space to actually trust the process.
You Can Only Control Yourself: It is beautiful when a partner or family member supports your wellness journey. But relying too heavily on them can lead to blame when they inevitably fall short. Accepting that your health is entirely your own responsibility isn't isolating, it's incredibly freeing. It's the ultimate form of "You Do You."
The Takeaway
Distractions, setbacks, and life curveballs are guaranteed. But transformation doesn't happen in a vacuum of perfect conditions. True health betterment is about how we maneuver through the chaos while maintaining our commitment to ourselves. The growth happens in how we move through them while continuing to choose ourselves, our health, and our future.
Trust in the process. Even when progress feels slow, the work is still working.
