Food Truths that no one talks about

We’re all told what to do because that’s just what you’re supposed to do. And if you ever questioned it, you were probably met with disapproval. Being curious or challenging the norm? Often swept under the rug as socially unacceptable. Unfortunately, this kind of teaching comes at a cost. It chips away at our critical thinking skills, the very skills that are essential in every area of life, especially when it comes to our relationship with food.
The Dangers When Critical Thinking Is Absent
Most of us are creatures of habit. We're shaped by our environment, so it’s no surprise that much of our social etiquette, mannerisms, and even our eating behaviors are learned. There’s a certain comfort in doing what everyone else does. It’s easy to follow the “norm.” But sometimes, following the crowd leads to misalignment. We start replacing what feels off with what we’re told is normal discomfort—or worse, we go numb. That disconnection? It may be why some of us turn to food in the first place, for comfort, happiness, satisfaction. Ironically, it might also be the very reason we stay stuck in an unhealthy cycle, writing it off as “just how it is” or chalking it up to “family genetics.”
Exhibit A: Here are a few learned habits as result...
“Finish everything on your plate”, even when you're already full.
Buying fast food or processed snacks because it’s “cheaper”, but what’s it costing you in the long run?
Loading the shopping cart with treats to curb hunger, rather than understanding what your body actually needs.
The Plot Thickens: Confusion in the Name of Self-Care
Now we’re told to prioritize self-care. But what does that even look like?
Do we fast for long hours?
Do we cut out entire food groups?
Do we follow trendy diets that work for a while, then leave us burnt out and back at square one?
Every path seems to bring a new challenge. And when we hit a wall, we return to what’s familiar: emotional eating, stress snacking - back to the norm of discomfort as a result.
How It All Ends (or Really, How It Begins)
It starts with this: Pay attention; Become challenging. Ask yourself:
What’s actually working for me
What foods or approaches empower me, and which ones don’t?
The questions you ask are the foundation of true ownership over your well-being. They help you build awareness, clarity, and ultimately, sustainable health habits that become second nature over time. The truth is: you are in charge of you!
