Rethinking the Metric: Why It’s Time to Change Our Health Language

When it comes to our health, the advice feels endless. Yet, so much of it just isn’t pertinent to our unique needs. We try the latest trends, listen to the loudest voices, and look everywhere else for answers only to find ourselves right back at square one, wondering why nothing is working. It is incredibly frustrating to feel like you are putting in the effort, only to realize you are falling further behind your health goals. We focus so much on the quick fix that we never take the time to explore how we got here in the first place. If you are tired of being in the dark, feeling uncertain about your next steps, and chasing unsustainable deadlines, this article is for you. It’s time to move the conversation forward, step out of the frustration, and finally tap into a balanced approach to self-care that finally aligns with your wellness journey.

How many times have you stepped on the scale, felt a sinking feeling in your stomach, and let a single number dictate the mood of your entire day?

We’ve been conditioned to look at the scale as the ultimate judge of our health objectives. But the truth is, the scale doesn't give us the full picture. While we obsess over a number that refuses to budge, the incredible effort we put into our daily habits goes completely unnoticed. Our inner dialogue shifts to everything we aren’t doing, rather than celebrating the positive choices we are making.

It’s time for a different set of health parameters, ones that actually align with our true well-being.

Moving Beyond the Quick Fix

We see it all the time in conventional care: you get your lab work back, notice elevated lipid levels or a creeping A1c, and the conversation immediately shifts to prescribing medication.

But what if we paused to look at the root cause? If life-long dietary habits got us to these elevated values, shouldn't we look at how to use food as medicine to reverse them? It’s easy to throw our hands up and blame genetics, but the reality is that our daily habits are the one thing we can control.

Instead of reclaiming our power, however, we often look outward for answers:

  • We listen to uncredentialed social media influencers who hand out blanket advice without context. (Seriously, how do they know you aren't eating enough protein?)

  • We jump from one extreme diet to another, only to find out it’s completely unsustainable.

  • We fall into the "all-or-nothing" cycle going incredibly hard on weekdays, only to completely derail on weekends and holidays.

When we leave our health entirely in someone else’s hands, it feels like chronic illness was inevitable. We end up relying on invasive procedures and heavy-duty prescriptions when we could be building sustainable health habits for life.

The Real Challenge Isn't What You Think

Wellness strategies aren’t actually complex. In fact, they are quite simple. What’s hard is the psychological shift:

  • Moving from familiar, comfortable habits to the unfamiliar.

  • Changing your internal health language to include grace and compassion.

  • Undoing the punishing "all-in or all-out" mentality.

  • Using tools like the scale or food journaling to assess and understand patterns, rather than the judge and shame game.

Between work, family, and life’s daily stressors, trying to navigate this untapped space of self-care can feel dark and bleak. But it doesn’t have to be.

Unlocking a New Approach to Health

Finding happiness in your health journey doesn't have to be hard, but it does require effort, consistency, and a healthy dose of balance, just like anything else worth doing in life. By thinking outside the traditional box and adopting simple, sustainable strategies, you can completely transform your relationship with food and find lasting health outcomes as a result.

It’s time to start choosing you instead of putting everyone and everything else first.
